CreateSpace Digital Proof Streamlined

Love what CreateSpace has done for the digital proofs of books. Gone are the days of waiting on snail-mail to see what a book will look like pre-publication (although that can still works wonders for editing, etc). Now you can get a feel for everything online thanks to the new design. Here’s a video showing the digital proof process in real time.

Amazon Europe CreateSpace Now Better for UK, Germany, etc.

CreateSpace logoIndie authors in Europe have long complained Amazon and CreateSpace hadn’t done enough to promoted their paper books, plus the shipping costs from America made the price unreasonable. That just changed. From the press release:

Amazon customers in Europe now get immediate availability and local shipping costs on CreateSpace books enabled for distribution in Europe.

CreateSpace, an Amazon company, today announced that authors and publishers around the world can now use its independent publishing platform to distribute their books in Europe for free on,,, and By using CreateSpace to distribute directly to Amazon, authors and publishers ensure that their titles are always in stock for customers to purchase. Books will be available for same-day shipping, and are also eligible for free shipping and Amazon Prime. CreateSpace authors and publishers will earn industry-leading royalties on each sale while continuing to own the rights and have creative control over their work. Additionally, CreateSpace authors and publishers can now receive their royalty payments by direct deposit in US dollars, British pounds or Euro.

Along with great distribution, CreateSpace provides manufacturing-on-demand technology, which means books are printed when a customer orders it so the author doesn’t have to make an up-front investment in inventory. If they need help at any point in the independent publishing process, they can also take advantage of CreateSpace’s English-language professional services and 24/7 member support.

Gayle Laakmann McDowell is the author of the best seller “Cracking the Coding Interview,” which is independently published through CreateSpace. “When I launched my book on Amazon via CreateSpace two years ago, I saw my sales increase by 10 times, eventually becoming Amazon’s best-selling interview book,” said McDowell. “Europe has always proven difficult for me to enter though–how do I print, distribute, and ship my book in the multitude of countries there? I’m so excited to see that CreateSpace is launching European distribution. In 30 seconds and just a few clicks, this has enabled me to tap a whole new market and resolve a problem I’d been laboring over for months. This is huge for me–huge.”

“We are very excited to offer our members the option to distribute their books on Amazon sites in Europe. By doing so, they will make their books available and in stock to millions of European readers,” said Libby Johnson McKee, Managing Director, CreateSpace. “We are continually working to deliver exceptional value and world-class customer service to our CreateSpace members worldwide, and European distribution is yet another great example of our commitment to helping our authors succeed.”

CreateSpace Pro Plan Discontinued

CreateSpace logoHeads up to Indie authors with paperbacks using CreateSpace and the Pro Plan, which is something I use too. As of today, Jan-18-2011, the feature is being discontinued. The Pro Plan cost $39/year/book and allowed authors a reduced price when purchasing their own books. It also enabled better royalties on all sales along with Expanded Distribution channels to more booksellers, libraries, etc. For just $39/year, it was something that definitely made sense to do, easily paying for itself after a few dozen orders.

CreateSpace just sent me this letter, which says;

We’ve discontinued Pro Plan and now all authors receive the benefit of lower member order costs and higher royalty payouts previously available through Pro Plan, for free.

Where is the Pro Plan star icon?
Since we’ve discontinued Pro Plan, the star icon has been replaced with a solid blue book icon for all paperback books.

How do I get Expanded Distribution now that Pro Plan is gone?
Expanded Distribution is now $25. To purchase Expanded Distribution and enroll your book through these channels, click “Channels” from your Project Homepage and then click the orange “Add to Cart” button.

What happens to my existing title enrolled in Pro Plan?
Royalties and member order rates will remain the same for titles that were previously on Pro Plan. These titles will also remain available through the channels you selected within Expanded Distribution. If your Pro Plan title is not already enrolled in Expanded Distribution, you can enroll it for free at any time.

What happens to my existing title not enrolled in Pro Plan?
Your member cost for book orders will drop and your royalty earnings will increase. Use our order calculator and royalty calculator to determine your rates. These titles can be enrolled in Expanded Distribution for $25. Confirm your title’s Expanded Distribution before purchasing.

Guess my only question is if they’ll reimburse us the $14 difference? Probably not, but I still love CreateSpace as my preferred method of making paperbacks for free and selling them on Amazon.

Paperback Dolls, Indie Author Reviews and More

paperback dollsAlthough this blog usually reports on all things related to Indie authors who sell ebooks, an exception seemed appropriate for Paperback Dolls, an international site with impressive stats – 58,020 unique visitors and 87,584 page loads from May to December of 2010 alone. (Actually not that much of an exception since CreateSpace is my recommended place to self-publish with Amazon’s print-on-demand company, which is also free.) Paperback Dolls is composed of 10 ladies who simply love reading and writing reviews. What great names they have too. Noa, Day, Kitt, Desilula, Elvie, Mona, Suz, Lil, Believer and Alli each have varied backgrounds and tastes for reading, but they all love it and just might review your book.

How does an Indie author go about getting reviewed? From their website:

Authors, Publishers, and Publicists,
Thank you for considering Paperback Dolls.
Inquiry Time Frame:
All inquiries will be read within three days of submission, after which any acceptance confirmations will be sent. We apologize that we are unable to accept every inquiry, but please be assured that we are always happy to consider any and all new inquiries.
Genres We Typically Review:
Noa-Romance, Mystery, Thrillers, Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, Historical Fiction, Biographies, History, and Young Adult.
Day– *No longer taking review requests at this time.
Kitt– *No longer taking review requests at this time.
Elvie-Fiction, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Mystery.
Desi– Young Adult, Middle-grade, Childrens
Alli– Chick-lit, Women’s fiction
Suz– Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Steampunk, Erotica (ebooks only)
Believer– Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance
Lil– Contemprary fiction, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

See their Review Policy for complete updates. A request for more info and a possible review was sent by me about a week ago, haven’t heard back yet so perhaps my genres didn’t excite them (understandable).

They also do Giveaways and allow space on their site for Advertisers and Affiliates. Really it looks like a perfect opportunity for writers of romance, paranormal romance, thrillers, young adult, urban fantasy and anything related to women in general. Just make sure to get some paperbacks made with CreateSpace if you haven’t already.
